Garmin is a company which started as a GPS maker in 1989 but has now branched out into making sport devices, including the Garmin Forerunner 310XT. Garmin’s GPS devices can be found in many sectors, including aviation, marine, and mobile applications. They are truly specialists in GPS. Still, they have produced some great devices for tracking dozens of statistics for practitioners of many sports.

Garmin makes devices for golfers, cyclists, runners, swimmers, and multi-sport athletes. This is where the Forerunner 310XT comes in. It is a multi-sport device designed to aid primarily triathletes. Garmin’s philosophy is to create products that help you train smarter. Though the 310XT is perfect for the serious triathlete, the average athlete will enjoy and benefit from using it as well.

The Forerunner 310XT is a fully GPS enabled device that tracks movement and can sends data to your computer wirelessly. It can track you while running and cycling, and has recently been updated to be able to estimate swim distance and speed as well. For cyclists, the device can be used with an optional bike mount (which is sold separately). The 310XT can also track transition times for triathletes. Here are a few main specifications:

- Weight: 2.5 oz
- Battery Life: up to 20 hours
- Color: grey/orange
- Water resistant: yes, to 164 feet
- Heart rate monitor: no, but this can be purchased with the 310XT if desired

In addition to being compatible with the optional heart rate monitor, the Forerunner 310XT can be used in conjunction with the Tanita BC-1000 body composition device. This is a handy feature for fitness nuts as it allows you to track weight, body fat, percentage of water weight, bone weight and many other things.

For the 310XT, Garmin decided to branch out from their mostly black color scheme and create a hip look with grey and orange. The rectangular display is large and easy to read. The Forerunner 310XT has become popular for good reason. It performs many functions (more than can be outlined here), and is fairly easy to use. However, before investing in one, it would be wise to explore if the 310XT does what you need it to do alone or if you have to purchase additional pieces, like the heart rate monitor, foot pod, bike mount, etc. Overall, this device is great for athletes of all ages willing to take the time to learn to use it.
